London, Greater London, United Kingdom Imperial College London Full time

The Imperial College London is seeking a highly skilled microbial ecologist to contribute to a pioneering project focused on suppressing the pathogens of wheat (T. aestivum). The project aims to manipulate the extant soil microbiome to aid the suppression of the take-all fungus, Gaeumannomyces tritici, in the wheat rhizosphere. This involves optimising/engineering soil microbiomes to promote wheat growth and/or suppress resistance to G. trici.

As a key member of the research team, you will design and carry out lab/CE-room experiments to explore ways to manipulate and optimise soil microbiomes. You will work closely with a team of researchers, technicians, and students to advance our fundamental understanding of microbial community dynamics in complex environments. The project represents a multi-disciplinary collaboration among the , , and labs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and conducting experiments to manipulate and optimise soil microbiomes
  • Working with a team to advance our understanding of microbial community dynamics
  • Collaborating with researchers, technicians, and students to achieve project goals
  • Communicating research findings through conference presentations and scientific publications

Requirements:

  • Hold, or near completion of, a PhD in a relevant field
  • Excellent scientific communication skills, as evidenced by presentations at scientific conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Evidence of effective collaborative work in a team environment
  • Experience with the basics of experimental design and statistical analysis (the latter in the R programming environment)
  • Demonstrated research experience in at least two of the following areas: microbiome engineering, plant-fungal interactions, plant pathology, soil microbial ecology, agronomy

The Imperial College London offers a sector-leading salary and remuneration package, including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes. You will also have the opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
