About the Role

As a Horticulture Apprentice with South Gloucestershire Council, you will play a vital role in maintaining and enhancing the quality of our public parks and green spaces. This is an exciting opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge in horticulture and landscaping, while contributing to the well-being of our community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily maintenance of parks and green spaces, including litter clearance, bin emptying, and visual inspections.
  • Learn and apply horticultural techniques, such as replanting display beds, working in the greenhouse, and cutting lawns.
  • Participate in the shaping and maintenance of formal hedges and the clearance of leaf fall from parks.
  • Develop skills in cultivating and preparing soil for seeding and planting, as well as maintaining general amenity turf and decorative areas.
  • Understand and apply health and safety protocols, and manage personal performance to achieve goals.
  • Work closely with a workplace mentor to complete a Level 2 qualification in Horticulture Operative.

Requirements

  • Hold an English and Maths qualification at grade D or 3 and above, or be willing to work towards gaining Level 2 in English and Maths.
  • Demonstrate good attention to detail and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Have a genuine interest and passion for horticulture and landscaping.
  • Exhibit a strong work ethic and commitment to gaining qualifications and learning on the job.

Training and Development

As a Horticulture Apprentice, you will attend weekly day release at Wiltshire College, Lackham Park, to complete your training. The council will cover your travel expenses to the college.

Assessment and Evaluation

To successfully complete the apprenticeship, you will be required to complete an end-point assessment consisting of a Practical Assessment, Professional Discussion, and Online Knowledge Assessment.
