Job Description

The Head of Group Logistics Procurement role is a critical position within DS Smith, reporting directly to the Group Procurement Director. This individual will work collaboratively with the Head of Group Logistics Operations to drive strategic initiatives and achieve business objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategy and Vision
    • Develop and implement comprehensive logistics procurement strategies, aligned with the company's overall business goals.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for cost reduction, process improvement, and supply chain optimization.
    • Lead the development of supplier category strategies, ensuring alignment with business objectives and industry best practices.
  • Market Intelligence and Risk Management
    • Monitor market trends and economic fundamentals to inform procurement decisions and mitigate supplier risk.
    • Develop and implement strategies to reduce supplier risk, including sole supplier risk, and ensure competitive supply in times of constrained markets or supply shortages.
    • Partner with the Head of Energy to support the operational management of commodity hedging and reduce exposure to price volatility.
  • Contracting and Supplier Management
    • Develop and implement effective contracting strategies to mitigate legal and regulatory exposure, including supplier failure to perform.
    • Work closely with Commercial and Legal teams to deliver commercial and contractual solutions for logistics operations.
    • Ensure the financial aspects and impact of contracts are clear to all parties, and negotiate and agree contracts that meet business requirements.
  • Initiative Management and Leadership
    • Lead the delivery of logistics procurement initiatives, including tendering, e-auctions, cost negotiations, price benchmarking, supplier consolidation, and rationalization.
    • Manage large-scale supplier market tender approaches, ensuring alignment with business objectives and industry best practices.
    • Develop and implement innovative tools, workflows, analytics, approaches, and technology to increase the value delivered and productivity of commercial procurement.
  • Supplier Relationship and Performance Management
    • Develop and implement effective supplier performance management processes, ensuring continuous improvement initiatives with suppliers.
    • Ensure supplier reviews are conducted at appropriate frequencies, and develop a clear framework for roles and responsibilities for managing supplier performance management activities.
    • Partner with stakeholders to ensure suppliers are segmented, and develop relationship management strategies and governance models.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
    • Build relationships across the procurement community, operational country, cluster, regional, divisional, and cross-functional stakeholders.
    • Engage with a range of stakeholders, from site SC managers to senior operations leaders, to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
    • Represent the Logistics Function on procurement topics in cross-functional Group and Divisional Initiatives.
  • Health and Safety
    • Ensure Health and Safety (H&S) within the team, operating in line with company procedures to enable a safe working environment.
    • Ensure H&S clauses are included in supplier contracts and manage supplier non-compliance issues or breaches.
Requirements
  • Functional Competencies
    • A strong knowledge and demonstrated experience of senior leadership roles in logistics procurement, covering warehousing, road transportation, multi-modal transportation, logistics planning and execution, 3PL, and freight.
    • Experience of leading transformational change in supply chain in a matrix environment.
  • Leadership and Behavioural Competencies
    • Delivery of results: Ability to deliver to agreed savings and value targets.
    • Proven ability to grow and develop high-performance teams.
    • Problem-solving: Ability to use information, analysis, and insights to identify and unlock opportunities across the supply base.
    • Programme delivery: Ability to lead a portfolio of strategic and tactical procurement initiatives with competing resources and priorities.
    • Prioritisation skills: Ability to independently prioritise work and deliver procurement initiatives in a complex matrix environment.
    • Communication and influencing: Ability to build strong, trusting relationships with cross-functional and cross-geographical stakeholders in an ambiguous and complex matrix.
  • Other Skills and Competencies
    • Fluency in English. Fluency in another European language in Europe where DS Smith has a presence would be an advantage.
