Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a General Manager to lead the surgical cluster of services at Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The surgical cluster incorporates Surgery and Urology, Theatres and Anaesthetics, Gastroenterology and Endoscopy, and Orthopaedics and Rheumatology.

Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a district general hospital situated in a beautiful and remarkable part of the country, close to London yet surrounded by royal parks, historic buildings, and the River Thames. We employ just under 5000 staff who proudly and efficiently support over 350,000 people locally through a full range of diagnostic and treatment services.

Main Duties of the Job

The General Manager for the Cluster is a high-profile leadership role within the Trust. The post holder will be responsible for overall management and leadership of the cluster, working closely with the Clinical Director to deliver, develop, and evaluate all services within their remit.

The post holder will ensure that effective and efficient structures are in place to ensure that all standards of patient care are met and associated risk and governance matters are managed. The post holder will support the Clinical Director in developing efficient and effective patient-centred services, meeting key financial and operational performance targets, and putting in place effective processes for delivering national/local targets.

The post holder will work with internal and external stakeholders to identify and exploit opportunities for service redesign through the application of relevant service improvement techniques.

Job Responsibilities

The General Manager will be responsible for:

  • Overall management and leadership of the cluster
  • Working closely with the Clinical Director to deliver, develop, and evaluate all services within their remit
  • Ensuring effective and efficient structures are in place to meet patient care standards and manage risk and governance matters
  • Supporting the Clinical Director in developing efficient and effective patient-centred services
  • Meeting key financial and operational performance targets
  • Putting in place effective processes for delivering national/local targets
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to identify and exploit opportunities for service redesign
Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Education to degree level or evidence of sound intellectual ability and ongoing personal development at senior management level
  • Recognised post-graduate management qualification or equivalent experience
  • Significant general and operational management experience, including the management of a large multi-disciplinary group of staff, part of which to have been in the NHS
  • A proven record of success in managing significant operational/strategic change while also developing and maintaining the provision of a high-quality service, within a clinical setting, with multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience of team working and building and maintaining effective working relationships in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Fully developing staff potential through facilitating training, development, and education initiatives
  • Demonstrable ability to lead and influence
  • Evidence of sound budgetary management experience
  • Experience in service redesign and project management
