Backend Software Engineer

We are seeking a skilled Backend Software Engineer to collaborate with our content teams.

Our autonomous teams take full responsibility for their part of the Spotify ecosystem, including writing high-quality code, hosting services in Google Cloud Platform, monitoring services, measuring quality, and ensuring service reliability. As a Backend Software Engineer, you will join a team passionate about distributed backend systems, scalability, and continued development. Together, we strive to create a phenomenal Spotify experience for users worldwide.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and deploy backend services with a focus on high availability, low latency, and scalability
  • Build and operate infrastructure, toolsets, and deployment pipelines
  • Collaborate closely with engineers in the team and product area, as well as across Spotify, to become a valued team member
  • Take operational responsibility for services owned by your team, including on-call and goalie rotations
  • Work in an environment that supports individual growth and continuous improvement
  • Contribute to product innovation by developing services and collaborating with development and product teams
Requirements
  • You hold a degree in computer science or a related field and have at least 1+ years of experience in a similar backend engineering position
  • You are comfortable designing, implementing, and maintaining systems with Java, as well as other languages like Python and Scala, and understand clean code principles
  • You can reason about trade-offs between different databases and have hands-on experience with SQL and NoSQL databases
  • You are T-shaped, meaning you can use the right technology as a tool when needed, and have experience with data engineering or a willingness to learn
  • You stay up-to-date with current best practices in your areas of expertise
  • You are comfortable working with modern infrastructure and tools, as well as Linux environments
  • You understand sound engineering practices like continuous delivery, defensive programming, and automated testing
  • You enjoy seeing millions of users running your code
  • You have a good understanding of data structures and algorithms
