About the Role

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Specialist Engineer to join their team. As a Specialist Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering specialist engineering activities to all wards and departments within a multidisciplinary environment, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and legal requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • To contribute to the achievement of good corporate governance throughout the Trust, and direct estates team members as required, ensuring their compliance with all Trust policies and procedures.
  • To be a lead in designated specialist engineering subjects in the process of ensuring compliance with all Trust Statutory and Non-Statutory responsibilities relating to the Trust's Estate.
  • To develop the culture of responsiveness, ownership, and customer care amongst Estates staff.
  • To work efficiently using complex technology to work within Service Level Agreements and key performance indicators.
  • To provide technical expertise and training on all aspects of Estates Maintenance function, promote communication at all levels, and bring innovation, monitoring, and measurement to ensure a value for money service.
  • To act and lead in a professional manner demonstrating the Trust's values when undertaking tasks and duties in contact with patients, visitors, and staff.

Requirements

  • Qualified to Degree Level in Engineering/Building Services or HNC/HND Mechanical/Electrical Engineering with significant management experience.
  • Extensive experience in operational maintenance in a Mechanical, Electrical, or Building service discipline or equivalent significant experience.
  • Membership of a Professional Institution, e.g., IHEEM, IEE, IET, CIBSE.
  • IOSH Managing Safely.
  • A recognised training qualification/apprenticeship in Electrical or Mechanical Services.

Desirable

  • Legionella awareness L8 - Responsible Person.
  • NEBOSH - Level 3 Certificate.
  • Appointments as an Authorised/Competent person.

Experience

  • Experience in specialist engineering in installation and maintenance systems.
  • Experience of supervisory responsibility for directly employed staff and contractors working on defects and PPM on technical, electrical, mechanical, or building disciplines found in an acute environment.
  • Experience of working in an Authorised Person role (Medical Gas, High Voltage).

Communication and Relationship Skills

  • Good organisational skills and ability to address and develop solutions to problems of a highly complex and contentious nature.
  • Ability to receive and interpret highly complex and contentious information of a sensitive nature and being able to communicate the magnitude of the situation with non-estates professionals so that the risks are clearly understood without causing panic.
  • Strong communication skills, for effective working relationships throughout the organisation, including presentation to Executive Directors.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Highly organised approach to work.
  • Strong IT/PC Skills to be able to develop and operate the various computer systems.
  • Evidence of good written and spoken communication skills.

  • Ability to interpret and make judgement across a wide range of highly complex estates issues taking into account legislation, expert advice, and conflicting demands.
  • Ability to understand and interpret legislation and develop work plans and policies.
  • Ability to react to unplanned events/emergencies in a controlled planned manner and communication of issues and progress as per the agreed communications policy.

  • Ability to cope with and manage demanding and stressful scenarios.
  • Ability to undertake performance monitoring fault diagnosis using fine tools and equipment.

  • To be able to participate on the Estates Management On Call Rota if required to do so.
