Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom MPOWIR Mentoring Physical Oceanography Women to Increase Retention Full time
About the Role

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic shelf seas modelling scientist to join our vibrant Marine Systems Modelling group at the National Oceanography Centre in Liverpool, UK.

The successful candidate will work on developing and applying the data-assimilation modelling system, based on NEMO and NEMOVAR, currently used in the NW European Continental shelf seas. They will exploit data arising from autonomous marine observing platforms, such as marine gliders, to predict the physical processes that control plankton growth in shelf seas.

The specific scientific focus will be on predicting the seasonal onset and breakdown of stratification, mixing at the pycnocline, and cross-frontal transport. The candidate will also work on developing the model validation approaches and systems, using the full spectrum of in-situ and remotely sensed observations.

The work will be directed towards trial operational observation/forecast periods and the production and assessment of multi-year assimilative products. The candidate will work closely with the UK Met Office and collaborate widely across the UK and internationally.

Timely publication in high-impact scientific journals is a key outcome of this work. The post is funded by the NERC/Defra/WWF Joint Strategic Response programme in Marine Integrated Autonomous Observing Systems and by the Copernicus Marine Environmental Monitoring Service's Northwest European Shelf Monitoring and Forecast Centre.

What We Offer

As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research projects and collaborate with leading experts in the field. We offer a competitive remuneration package, including a RCUK pension scheme and 30 days annual leave with a further 14 Public/local days off.

Opportunities for further training, development, and participation in international scientific activities are actively encouraged. We are committed to being a flexible employer to support employees' work and personal commitments where possible.

The National Oceanography Centre is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean. We are one of the top five institutions of our kind in the world, with sites in Liverpool and Southampton.

Our Commitment as an Employer

We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community. There is a guaranteed interview scheme for suitable candidates with disabilities, and we welcome applications from ethnic minorities currently under-represented.
