About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Lawyer to lead our Pre-Proceedings Team at Reading Borough Council. As a key member of our Joint Legal Team, you will be responsible for providing expert legal advice and representation to vulnerable adults, children, and young people in Berkshire.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of lawyers, paralegals, and legal assistants in handling pre-proceedings/PLO cases across Berkshire.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision and guidance to staff reporting directly to you.
  • Work closely with our Child Care Court Teams to develop and implement effective strategies for diverting families away from care proceedings.
  • Collaborate with our Legal Operations Team to deliver high-quality work and achieve Lexcel accreditation.

Requirements:

  • A current practicing certificate and entitlement to practice in England as a Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executive.
  • Significant post-qualification experience in a similar role.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and relationship-building skills.
  • A flexible approach to work and ability to use initiative.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work under pressure.
