Funding Opportunity Overview

Maximum Award: £6,250,000

This initiative invites applications for funding aimed at establishing an interdisciplinary network that unites the UK research and innovation community to enhance the understanding of the gut-immunology-brain axis (GIBA) throughout various life stages.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this funding, applicants must:

  • Be affiliated with a research organization eligible for Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) funding.
  • Fulfill individual eligibility requirements.
  • Receive an invitation to apply following a successful expression of interest.

The full economic cost (FEC) of the proposed project can reach up to £6,250,000, with BBSRC covering 80% of the FEC (£5,000,000).

The duration of the funding award may extend up to four years.

Application Process

Only those who have been invited to apply after a successful expression of interest to lead the GIBA Network+ are eligible to submit an application.

Leadership Team Requirements

The leadership team for the GIBA network should include:

  • One UK project lead, serving as the network director.
  • Up to four UK-based project co-leads, with one designated as co-director to assist the network director.
  • At least one early-career researcher as part of the team.
Project Partners

In addition to UK academic institutions, project partners may encompass individuals from:

  • Industry
  • The international community
  • Policy-making sectors
  • End users of research, such as clinicians and practitioners
  • Individuals with lived experiences
Ineligibility Criteria

Individuals who are not eligible to apply include:

  • International project co-leads
  • Project co-leads from business or third-sector organizations
