Job Title: Special Education Department Head

Job Summary:

The Special Education Department Head will provide leadership, coordination, and innovation in special education and related services to ensure that each student derives maximum benefit from their education.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Supervise and evaluate special needs and related service staff.
  2. Act as the Special Education TEAM Chairperson for initial and re-evaluation meetings.
  3. Act as a liaison between the building administration and Pupil Personnel Services.
  4. Consult with the building administration on special education matters.
  5. Coordinate and supervise the flow and access to special education student files.
  6. Assist in developing special education programs and curriculum adaptations.
  7. Meet with school administration to identify, refer, and evaluate students with special needs.
  8. Meet with special education staff for staff development, regulation requirements, and policies.
  9. Ensure special education services are carried out in accordance with individualized educational plans.
  10. Consult with staff, parents, and administrators on special education issues.
  11. Maintain accurate databases and files for students with special needs.
  12. Coordinate referral to placement procedures.
  13. Maintain updated files on students requiring special education services.
  14. Assist in program evaluation of special education and related services.
  15. Assist in scheduling students with special needs into appropriate classes.
  16. Assist in developing the special education budget.
  17. Assist in the recruitment, screening, and hiring of special education staff.
  18. Interpret special education law, regulations, and policies.
  19. Stay current with research, literature, and curricula related to special education.
  20. Support special education teachers in using best instructional practices.
  21. Advise the building principal on special education staff placement.
  22. Maintain an up-to-date inventory of departmental materials and supplies.
  23. Meet with other department heads and the Director of Special Education to ensure consistency.

Terms of Employment:

The Special Education Department Head will be employed on a school calendar year basis, with additional time as necessary to complete professional responsibilities.

Evaluation:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with procedures established by the School Committee.

Salary:

Appropriate teacher salary plus department head stipend.
