About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Scientist to join our team at National Nuclear Laboratory. As a key member of our Engineering Modelling capability, you will provide hands-on technical leadership and strategic direction to support the future civil nuclear power industry.

Main Responsibilities
  • Deliver NNL's EHSS&Q and Assurance objectives through technical expertise and leadership.
  • Develop and maintain a strong customer base to drive new opportunities for the team.
  • Collaborate with the Capability Manager to shape strategic plans aligned with the UK Nuclear landscape.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction to project teams to ensure successful delivery.
  • Ensure all projects comply with the team's robust Quality Assurance standards.
  • Maintain and improve the skills plan for the capability and develop a strategic training plan.
  • Manage workload and deliver high standards of technical work to time, cost, and quality.
  • Authorise technical projects and mentor younger team members.
  • Establish strong academic links to bridge the gap between research and commercial tools.
Requirements
  • M.Sc/Ph.D in Science, Mathematics, or an Engineering subject.
  • Demonstrable experience in technically leading teams in the nuclear industry or related fields.
  • Technical breadth and depth of knowledge in Structural Integrity and Heat Transfer.
  • Experience with IAEA Transport Regulations and commercial modelling tools.
  • Expertise in programming tools such as Python, MATLAB, and Mathcad.
  • Experience in developing and delivering strategic training plans.
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience with Fracture Mechanics, Life Assessment, and Damage Tolerance Assessments.
  • Experience with specifying seismic design requirements and verification.
  • Evidence of peer reviewing technical work in Structural Integrity and Heat Transfer.
  • Evidence of external publications in high-impact journals.
  • Familiarity with RWM and GDF disposal criteria.
