Job Summary

The post holder will be responsible for providing specialist services to children attending mainstream and special schools with Speech/Language and communication needs (SLCN), working closely with parents/carers, and staff to enable children to develop their speech, language, and communication skills and to access the curriculum.

To assess the needs for, develop, and implement specialist Speech and Language Therapy treatment to children referred to the SLT Education service (mainstream and special schools).

To provide advice to others regarding the management and care of children with communication difficulties.

Main Duties of the Job

To assess the need for, develop, and implement Speech and Language Therapy treatment to children with a wide range of speech, language, and communication difficulties.

To analyse auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic aspects of children's communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness in the home, school, and other relevant settings.

To make appropriate clinical decisions following assessment, using evidence-based practice and outcome measurement to provide the most effective treatment to children and their families within clearly defined care plans.

Person Specification

Education

Essential

  1. Registration with Health Professions Council as a speech and language therapist.
  2. Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent.
  3. Registered member of RCSLT.
  4. Courses and experience to a Specialist Dysphagia Practitioner level with babies and small children (as described in the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists Interprofessional dysphagia framework

Experience

Essential

  1. Working with clients who have a range of dysphagia, eating & drinking & communication needs. Clear, advanced clinical
  2. Specialised knowledge of paediatric therapy and management of dysphagia, eating & drinking & complex communication needs difficulties.
  3. Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals
  4. Knowledge and experience of assessment (including standardised) and treatment techniques in paediatrics.
  5. Experience of offering clinical supervision

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  1. Knowledge of assessment tools, treatment techniques, and therapeutic interventions
  2. Understanding of safeguarding
  3. Awareness of the principles of clinical governance/audit
  4. Working knowledge of the roles of other professionals in Health, Education, and Social Care involved with CYP.
  5. Demonstrates well-developed ability to analyse and reflect upon complex information.
  6. Excellent presentation skills, both written and verbal
  7. Prioritisation skills
