Job Overview

The Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Consultant Physician to join our team in the Acute Medicine and Nephrology departments. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to both acute medical care and specialized nephrology services, providing comprehensive care to a diverse patient population.

Responsibilities:

Acute Medicine:

  • Lead the acute medical take, providing expert care and decision-making for patients presenting with a variety of acute medical conditions.
  • Oversee the management of patients in a short stay inpatient general medical ward, ensuring high standards of clinical care and patient safety.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated and efficient care, participating in ward rounds, case discussions, and discharge planning.

Nephrology:

  • Supervise a cohort of haemodialysis patients, ensuring optimal dialysis management and addressing any complications that arise.
  • Conduct a general nephrology outpatient clinic, providing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment plans for patients with a range of kidney-related conditions.
  • Lead virtual clinics for the management of patients with chronic kidney disease, utilizing telemedicine to enhance patient access and monitoring.
  • Engage in patient education and counselling, promoting awareness and understanding of kidney health and disease management.

Main Duties of the Job

Education and Training: Contribute to the education and training of junior doctors, medical students, and other healthcare professionals. Provide mentorship and guidance to support their professional development.

Research and Innovation: Engage in clinical research and quality improvement projects to advance the field of acute medicine and nephrology. Encourage and participate in innovative practices and treatments.

Collaboration: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including nursing staff, allied health professionals, and administrative personnel, to ensure holistic patient care.

On-call Duties: Participate in the on-call rota, providing expert support and decision-making during emergency situations.

Key Requirements:

  • CCT in Acute/General Medicine and Nephrology or equivalent.
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and inclusion on the Specialist Register.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing acute medical conditions and nephrology disorders.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and team-working skills.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and participation in clinical audits and research activities.

Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Broad, practical experience in Acute and General Internal Medicine; Regular, recent participation in the acute medical take and on-call.
  • Widespread broad-based knowledge of all aspects of renal medicine, dialysis and transplantation.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in Intensive care, and Emergency medicine.

Skills

Essential Criteria

  • ALS: Competent in all practical procedures necessary to run the acute medical take.

Desirable Criteria

  • Other skills – Ultrasound, Echocardiography.
  • Kidney biopsy.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • MRCP or Equivalent.
  • Certificate of completion of training (CCT) (or proposed CCT within 6 months of interview) or Certificate of eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) in Renal Medicine.
  • AIM and/or GIM accredited as part of CCT or equivalent.

Desirable Criteria

  • Higher Degree.
  • Publication of papers in appropriate journals/literature.
  • Clinical, basic research, epidemiological, health delivery and/or health economic publications related to acute medicine.

Essential Criteria

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must be a Team player with demonstrable experience working and leading acute medical, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong Leadership skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • A passion to work within the East End of London to ensure that its population receive the best medical care and our trainees receive the best medical training in Britain.
  • Evidence of participation in research activities.
