About the Role

The Marie Curie Companion at Home service is a professional volunteer opportunity that provides one-to-one companionship and support to individuals with a terminal illness and their families. As a Companion at Home volunteer, you will play a vital role in enhancing the lives of those in need, offering emotional support, practical assistance, and respite for carers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Visit individuals in their homes, care homes, or community settings, providing companionship and emotional support.
  • Assist with daily tasks, such as making tea, accessing the internet, or accompanying individuals to appointments.
  • Offer respite for carers, allowing them to take a break and recharge.
  • Provide emotional support and signposting to relevant local services, as needed.
  • Keep your manager informed of any changes or significant events affecting the individual or their family.
  • Submit regular visit reports and update relevant computer systems.
Requirements
  • Commitment and reliability, with the ability to dedicate approximately 3 hours per week.
  • Patience, empathy, and emotional stability.
  • An understanding of confidentiality and respect for individuals' privacy, dignity, and independence.
  • Flexibility to adapt to the needs of the individual.
  • Excellent listening skills and ability to build rapport with others.
