Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Automotive Technician to join our team at the City of Birmingham. As a key member of our maintenance team, you will be responsible for performing journeyman-level tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy-duty trucks, garbage packers, and other standard and specialized gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on heavy trucks and equipment, including hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and engine components.
  • Inspect equipment to determine the need for maintenance and/or repair work, and perform diagnostic tests to identify problems.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to less experienced employees working in the same unit.
  • Plan and execute work duties in accordance with instructions, policies, and accepted practice.
  • Work under the direction of a supervisor, but use independent judgment to determine the method of repair needed to complete assigned tasks.
Requirements
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain a CDL within 180 days of hire.
  • Completion of coursework/certification program OR gained work experience in the following areas:
    • Diagnosing problems with diesel engines using manual tools and gauges.
    • Diagnosing problems with gasoline or diesel engines using scan tools or a computer.
    • Performing repairs on diesel and gasoline engines.
    • Performing electrical repairs on automobiles and trucks.
    • Inspecting and repairing steering and suspension.
    • Inspecting and repairing air brake systems.

  • Knowledge of the methods involved in the repair of large vehicles and heavy equipment.
Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in employer-owned facilities such as workshops and involves the use of electrical, gas, or air-powered tools and equipment. Work may be conducted in cramped work spaces requiring extended periods in contorted body positions and exposure to contaminants such as dust, gasoline, and/or caustic chemicals, and to potential mechanical and moving vehicle hazards. Work involves exposure to extreme temperatures (hot and cold), working around uneven, cluttered, and slippery surfaces, high vibration, and loud noise.

Physical Demands

Job involves significant and concerted physical exertion required for regular prolonged periods of carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or walking. Involves lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Work involves the ability to read small numbers and letters on meters.
