Role Overview

We are seeking a skilled Grounds Assistant to join our estates team at Luton Hoo. As a key member of our team, you will assist the Estate Manager and the gardening and groundskeeping teams in achieving the highest standards of horticulture across the estate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and Estate, Gardens and Golf Course as instructed by the Estate Manager.
  • Understand and be aware of the history of the Estate, including architects and landscape gardeners and how they have influenced and developed Luton Hoo.
  • Wear and maintain all necessary personal protective equipment as provided.
  • Assist with ongoing project work across the Estate including hard and soft landscaping.
  • Ensure that the Estates responsibilities for all Health and Safety aspects are maintained.
  • Ensure that horticultural equipment is secured during work hours and is locked away and secured after each shift.
  • Assist with the development of turf culture, hedge cutting and the pruning/training of ornamental trees and shrubs and climbing plants in many styles.
  • General weed control and tidying.
  • Planting and aftercare of various trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants as instructed by the Estates Manager.
  • Assist in the maintenance of pond, fountains, and other water features in conjunction with the Estates Team.
  • Cleaning snow from driveways, patios and steps and the spreading of salt as required.
  • Process fallen timber into usable logs for the Mansion House.
  • External building maintenance, gutter clearing, drain clearing, refuse collection.
  • Understand the minutes of meetings and policies as communicated by the Estates Manager.
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance for guest use, the croquet and tennis courts during the spring/summer periods.
  • Maintain good working relationships with colleagues, resident staff, Southern Estate.
  • Assist with Hedge cutting, Strimming and mowing in the Gardens, Golf Course and the wider Estate.
