Museum Collections Coordinator

Job Summary:
The SS Great Britain Trust is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Collections Officer to join our team. As a Collections Officer, you will play a critical role in the care and management of our Designated Collection, ensuring that our museum objects and library materials are preserved and made accessible to the public.
Main Responsibilities:
- Provide digital and physical access to the Trust's Designated Collection, ensuring that our museum objects and library materials are preserved and made accessible to the public.
- Assist the Head of Collections in maintaining excellent standards of documentation in accordance with Spectrum and ACE Accreditation standards, ensuring that our collection management procedures are up-to-date and compliant with industry standards.
- Carry out documentation procedures relating to museum objects, including accessioning, photographing, and making electronic records for new acquisitions and existing collections, ensuring that our collection data is accurate and up-to-date.
- Upload content and maintain the online collections catalogue and image sales platform, enabling image licensing for publications and reproducing images for retail purposes, while ensuring that our online presence is engaging and informative.
- Develop object history or other files as required, ensuring that our collection data is comprehensive and accurate.
- Produce inventories of objects and other files as required, ensuring that our collection data is up-to-date and accurate.
- Carry out marking and labelling of objects and library materials as required, ensuring that our collection is properly identified and catalogued.
- Follow agreed security processes to ensure the security of the library and object collections, including managing visitors' physical access to the Brunel Institute.
- Assist with the management of the Integrated Pest Management System in the Brunel Institute, Dockyard Museum, and Being Brunel, ensuring that our collections are protected from pests and damage.
- Carry out monthly conservation cleaning of the Archive Vault and Conservation Suite, ensuring that our collections are properly preserved and maintained.
- Manage visitors' safe use of the Brunel Institute, ensuring that both their learning and enjoyment, and the safety of the collections, are prioritized.
- Supervise the open access sessions 'Archive in Five', creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and ensuring that our collections are accessible and engaging.
- Together with the other Collections Officer, oversee the Library and Collections Volunteers, ensuring that work is proceeding at a pace in line with the Collections Plan and to a satisfactory standard.
- Carry out duties in accordance with the Museums Association Code of Ethics and current legislation, ensuring that our collections are properly managed and preserved.
- Any other reasonable duties as required, including regular weekend and evening work, and occasional out-of-hours responsibilities.
Person Specification:
The ideal candidate will have:
- Understanding of good practice and experience in documentation work and collection management procedures, including SPECTRUM.
- Experience of working with collections in a museum/heritage environment.
- Experience of using a collections management system.
- Demonstrable experience of computerised data entry and carrying out digitisation of collection items.
- IT skills in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Initiative and the ability to work unsupervised, with a flexible approach.
- Ability to respond to changing priorities and competing demands.
- Commitment to continuing professional development.
- Attention to detail.
- Demonstrable experience of engaging with the public.
Desirable:
- Knowledge and experience of using the collections management database Axiell Collections.
- Experience of managing volunteers.
- Understanding of copyright issues for heritage institutions.
