Maintenance Assistant

We are seeking an experienced Maintenance Assistant to join our team at our educational establishment in Haywards Heath. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out a range of maintenance tasks, including carpentry, painting and decorating, plumbing and minor electrical work.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Report to and liaise with the Head of Maintenance regarding all issues related to the maintenance and administration of the educational facility.
  • Carry out building and site repairs, health and safety compliance, fire risk analysis and compliance, security, plumbing, COSHH and general maintenance.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance, reviewing and negotiating with subcontractors, coordinating repairs and performing compliance tests under the supervision of the Head of Maintenance.
  • Order parts, chemicals and stock in accordance with the budget and purchasing procedures, adhering to cost control and monitoring maintenance expenditure within the approved budget.
  • Maintain and ensure compliance with all appropriate health and safety regulations.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Undertake regular checks on a systematic basis, including weekly Legionella flush, monthly carbon-monoxide checks, monthly window safety checks, monthly Blind Cleat safety check, monthly Smoke Alarm Battery check, monthly Fire Extinguishers and Fire Blanket checks, and weekly Playground Equipment Safety checks.
  • Assist the Groundsman with gardening duties throughout the year and maintenance of the grounds, including mowing and marking pitches, as directed by the Head of Maintenance in conjunction with the Groundsman.
  • Be out of hours duty phone holder on a rota basis to be agreed and secondary phone response contact in case of emergency.
  • Assist with School logistics, including stage/seating erection.
  • Maintain internal and external lighting, including setting time clocks.
Requirements:
  • Meticulous maintenance skills, with electrical certification an advantage.
  • Full, clean driving licence, with D1 licence an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A warm and professional manner.
  • Attention to detail and safety.
  • Loyalty, tact, enthusiasm and flexibility.
Working Hours:
  • This is a permanent full-time role, with hours of 8.00am to 5pm Monday-Friday, with flexibility for part-time hours to be considered.
