About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional candidate to join our team as an Assistant Professor in Digital Humanities and the Ancient World at Durham University.

The successful candidate will have a strong research background in Digital Humanities and the Ancient World, with a proven track record of high-quality research outputs and a Personal Research Plan that demonstrates a clear vision for their future research.

The role will involve pursuing research that is high quality in terms of originality, significance, and rigour, as well as playing a role in relevant teaching and research supervision, and contributing to ongoing curriculum development.

The successful candidate will also contribute to enhancing the quality of the research environment in the Department, the wider University, and beyond through collaborative research activity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pursue research that is high quality in terms of originality, significance, and rigour.
  • Play a role in relevant teaching and research supervision, and contribute to ongoing curriculum development.
  • Contribute to enhancing the quality of the research environment in the Department, the wider University, and beyond through collaborative research activity.
  • Deliver lectures, seminars, and tutorials at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels, as well as engaging in related activity such as assessment.
  • Contribute to attracting and supervising research students, and to enhance the Department's commitment to its vibrant and inclusive postgraduate culture.
  • Foster teaching and research links with the Faculty of Science and the Masters of Data Science (Digital Humanities) programme, and with the Liberal Arts programme in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

Person Specification

Candidates will have completed their PhD (or be close to completion) and should outline their experience, skills, and achievements to date, which demonstrate that they meet the essential criteria.

Research

  • Qualifications – a good first degree and a PhD (or close to completion at the time of application) in Classics, Ancient History, or another subject relevant to the post.
  • Outputs – evidence of high-quality outputs, some of which is recognised as internationally excellent or world-class.
  • A Personal Research Plan which gives evidence for a five-year individual programme of high-quality research outputs, and grant capture and impact case study work.
  • Income Generation – evidence of the willingness or the potential to engage in the development of successful research projects and quality research grant proposals.

Education

  • Quality – evidence of the development and delivery of effective and engaging teaching in the broad areas of Digital Humanities and the Ancient Greek World.
  • Innovation – experience, skills, and/or achievements that demonstrate your contribution to new programme development and innovation in the design and delivery of high-quality teaching and assessment of learning.
  • Strategic – evidence of strategic teaching development, or achievements that demonstrate the potential to engage in the design of excellent teaching programmes which are research informed and led.
  • Evidence of a willingness and ability to teach courses in the broad areas of Digital Humanities and the Ancient Greek World that complements and extends current Departmental teaching in the broad area.
  • Evidence of a willingness and ability to contribute teaching for the Faculty of Science's Masters of Data Science (Digital Humanities) programme and for the Liberal Arts programme of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at all levels, and to develop collaborative research initiatives between these areas.
