At Buckden Partners, we are seeking a seasoned professional to lead our credit risk framework and portfolio management function. As a senior leadership role, you will require a strategic mindset, technical expertise, and strong management skills.

About the Role

We estimate the salary for this position to be around £120,000 - £180,000 per annum, depending on experience. The ideal candidate will have 15+ years of credit risk experience in a real estate lending environment, with a deep knowledge of the UK residential property market and development finance.

You will be responsible for overseeing the entire credit risk lifecycle, from setting frameworks and policies to underwriting and portfolio monitoring. This is a pivotal role in shaping the credit risk strategy and ensuring its alignment with our business's growth objectives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Strategic Leadership: Collaborate with the CEO, Origination Team, and Credit Committee to set, innovate, and adapt the credit risk framework to align with our evolving risk appetite and growth.
  • Provide independent, expert advice to the CEO and Board on credit risk and portfolio management strategies.
  • Oversee and continually improve underwriting, risk, and credit policies, processes, and frameworks.
  • Team Management: Lead and develop the Credit and Portfolio Management teams, ensuring high performance and professional development.
  • Ensure the delivery of robust analysis and recommendations from your team.
  • Credit Risk Oversight: Review and sign-off on key credit policy documentation and underwriting documents.
  • Ensure a seamless and efficient credit committee process, including timely preparation and review of loan submissions, clear communication of conditions precedent, and concise minutes.
  • Provide commercial insights and sound judgement to support loan structuring and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Borrower & Transaction Management: Oversee borrower due diligence, including structuring of loan facilities and engagement with external professionals.
  • Ensure the accuracy and quality of all legal, valuation, and project monitoring reports presented to the Credit Committee.
  • Professionally manage relationships with advisors and ensure alignment with service expectations.
  • Execution and Compliance: Approve all key transaction elements, including facility letters, security documentation, and compliance requirements (e.g., KYC).
  • Manage post-drawdown tasks, including build monitoring, compliance with development covenants, and site visits.
  • Portfolio Management: Lead the Loan Monitoring and Watchlist process, ensuring dynamic credit grading and regular reporting to senior management.
  • Implement and manage default and restructuring strategies to maximize recovery and mitigate risk.
  • Exit Management: Oversee project sales strategies, including milestones, security discharges, and distribution approvals.
