Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Biotechnology Research Professional to join our team at the University of Cambridge. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals with a strong background in synthetic biology to contribute to cutting-edge research and development projects.

About the Role

The successful candidate will have a PhD, or be studying towards a PhD, in synthetic biology or a related field. They will have experience of genome editing and strain engineering in bacteria or yeast, as well as recombinant protein expression in Pichia pastoris. The ability to work both as part of a team and independently, coupled with excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills, are essential for this role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Benchmark open source yeast strains combined with expression constructs developed using the Open Yeast Collection to develop a yeast-based recombinant protein expression that can be freely distributed for commercial use.
  • Collaborate with Dr Scott Pownall on the Open Yeast Collection, supporting community-led development and characterisation of innovative DNA toolkits for protein expression in Pichia pastoris.
  • Support Prof Jim Haseloff and Dr Matthew Wayland on testing bioreactor and bioprocessing platforms to enable UK startups and SMEs to rapidly establish protein biomanufacturing workflows with low capital expenditure.
Requirements
  • PhD in synthetic biology or a related field.
  • Experience of genome editing and strain engineering in bacteria or yeast.
  • Recombinant protein expression in Pichia pastoris.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
