About the Role
We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Catering Team Member to join our team at Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our catering team, you will play a vital role in providing excellent customer service and delivering a high-quality catering service to our patients, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve meals and beverages to patients, staff, and visitors in a clean and safe environment.
- Assist in the preparation and presentation of food, including salads, sandwiches, and other basic food items.
- Support patient meal services by loading bulk trolleys or ward-level service of meals.
- Undertake basic cooking, cooking buffets, and breakfast items under the guidance of the Facilities Supervisor - Catering.
- Clean equipment and premises on a daily basis, adhering to duty rotas and work schedules.
- Undertake deep cleaning of all catering equipment within the department.
- Adhere to Food Hygiene Standards and Trust policy and procedures.
- Responsible for deliveries, stock control, and cleanliness of stock areas, raising shortfalls immediately to the Facilities Supervisor - Catering.
- Responsible for checking, cleaning, and refilling vending machines and 24-hour catering stores, completing all Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) documentation and sales controls for audit purposes.
- Assist customers experiencing problems with vending machines and resolve on behalf of the customer.
- Answer and resolve telephone queries and respond to requests from departments accurately and efficiently.
- Demonstrate role requirements to new starters.
- Set up meeting rooms and prepare food for special functions, including the preparation of beverages and buffet items, and then follow this clearing of the venue and washing up as required, ensuring all items are returned to the restaurant.
- Wash up ward-level patient equipment when required.
- Dispose of all waste food and refuse in a hygienic manner and in accordance with the Trust Waste Management Policy.
- Prepare the servery area and restaurant prior to service to ensure that all areas and display counters are attractively and properly presented at the start of the service and are replenished throughout the opening times.
- Prepare refrigerated commodities.
Person Specification
- GCSEs or good basic education.
- Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate.
- NVQ Level 2 Customer Service or willingness to work towards.
- Relevant catering experience.
- Basic knowledge of food hygiene; control of substances; hazard analysis, etc.
- Manual handling skills.
- Cash handling skills.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to communicate information effectively to patients, staff, and visitors.
- Ability to work as part of a team and follow instructions.
- Ability to make decisions in the absence of supervision.
- Physically able to push and pull catering equipment.
- Physically able to twist, turn, bend, stretch during duties.
- Physically able to work in a hot/cold environment.
- Physically able to move medium loads of food.
- Ability to communicate verbally with a diverse group of people.
- Ability to conduct oneself in a professional way.
- Flexibility to meet the needs of the service by covering all shifts to ensure service continuity.
