Aquatic Ecology Consultant Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Aquatic Ecology Consultant to join our team at AECOM. As a key member of our Aquatic Ecology team, you will work with other experts to protect, enhance, and restore the aquatic environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Undertake aquatic surveys in freshwaters, including fish, macroinvertebrates, crayfish, macrophytes, and riparian mammals.
  • Work with other environmental specialists and disciplines on important projects, large and small.
  • Collect and/or process freshwater macroinvertebrate samples in the laboratory, undertaking benthic macroinvertebrate surveys in freshwaters, and assisting with fieldwork and sample collection.
  • Assist with data entry, analysis, and processing for freshwater projects, contributing to survey reports and ecological appraisals, and liaising with project managers and clients.
  • Deliver consultancy and advisory services to a high level of technical quality, while prioritizing safety and security in all that you do.
  • Assist with fieldwork and sample collection and data analysis for freshwater projects.
  • Contribute to desk studies and literature reviews.
  • Contribute to data capture, collation, and presentation, survey reports, and ecological appraisals, which are produced to a high technical standard and within agreed deadlines.
  • Liaise with the wider Water Environment Team, internal project managers, and clients where necessary.

About the Role:

You will work on monitoring and impact assessment projects for Water Companies, Regulators (EA/NE), and private clients such as National Grid, solar, and wind farms, renewable energy projects, etc.

Our Aquatic Ecology team is 20+ specialists distributed around the UK; we have laboratories in Nottingham and Leeds, and a southern hub in Basingstoke.

As a key member of the Aquatic Ecology team, you will work with other experts as we work to protect, enhance, and restore the aquatic environment.


Qualifications:

We are looking for someone who is self-reliant, thrives on challenges, and is happy to collaborate with colleagues in other disciplines.

You will have experience of some or all of the following: aquatic ecology surveys such as fish, macroinvertebrates, crayfish, macrophytes, riparian mammals, River Habitat Survey, etc.

Qualified to degree level or MSc, or higher, in a relevant subject with some previous experience in an aquatic ecology or similar role.

Member of CIEEM or similar professional body; or eligible to qualify for this status.

Relevant training, potentially including Water Safety, First Aid.

Knowledge of current environmental legislation, including the Water Framework Directive.

Contribute to maintaining internal and external client relationships, including providing urgent ecological response and/or advice as required.

Travel to site.
