Database Administrator

Simplyhealth is a pioneering health company that's revolutionising access to healthcare in the UK. We're seeking an experienced Database Administrator to join our Data Systems team.

About the Role

As a Database Administrator, you'll work closely with our Operational Data Systems Lead to ensure the integrity and availability of all operational databases and some application servers. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing database and middleware server resources, including installation, system management, performance tuning, and backup.
  • Carrying out defined tasks associated with planning, installation, upgrade, operation, control, documentation, and maintenance of databases and middleware.
  • Contributing to the design, capacity planning, and strategic growth planning of all centralised databases and middleware.
  • Providing technical expertise and assistance to other IT professionals, both within Simplyhealth and to 3rd party contractors in the area of database management and middleware server systems.
  • Monitoring the latest developments in the area of expertise to provide longer-term technical planning.
  • Reviewing all areas of data management to maintain and improve efficiency.
  • Initiating regular exercises to optimise database and middleware performance.
  • Ensuring that recovery plans are tested regularly and performing recovery procedures when necessary.
  • Developing specifications based on requirements and plans for installation and commissioning of hardware and software.
  • Implementing new application software releases and patches in collaboration with the Application Support and Development teams.
  • Leading the investigation of complex problems to diagnose underlying causes, implementing known on-site solutions, and assisting users to recover and continue operation.
  • Assisting users experiencing difficulties in using databases and middleware systems, products, or services, including managing incidents referred by less experienced staff.
