About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Assistant Quality Engineer to join our team at Halfords. As a specialist retailer, we lead the market through customer-driven innovation and a distinct product range. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that Halfords products are fit-for-purpose, safe, and legal. This will involve working across a number of product groups, providing proactive and timely product technologist and quality assurance contribution to the development of products, product information, and manufacturing processes relevant to Halfords products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate products to verify compliance with company standards and all relevant legislation.
  • Propose quality improvements, concerns management activities, and product development programmes. Produce customer insights packs on product quality performance for Range Reviews.
  • Complete product specifications and assess suppliers to ensure they can consistently manufacture products to the correct specification.
  • Implement quality assurance processes and procedures to ensure that products meet the required quality standards before product launch.
  • Assure that samples meet the company's requirements by reviewing and arranging sign-off in various stages, including tender, pre-production, mass production, etc.
  • Travel as necessary within the UK, Europe, and Asia in collaboration with HGS Teams in Hong Kong and Shanghai and Taiwan, to assure at-pace product development and in support of sourcing activities to fulfil the role.
  • Investigate customer feedback and data by conducting failure analysis, identifying the root causes, planning for future improvements, preparing the Corrective and Preventive Action Plan (CAP).
  • Work and support across the Quality Team in other product areas, as required.
Requirements
  • Professionally qualified to BSc in Engineering, Product Design, Applied Science, or Manufacturing disciplines, or equivalent other experience.
  • Demonstrable experience of practical experience in product development and product technical/quality assurance in a Retail Quality/Technical/Technologist buying support role of General Merchandise or Consumer Products, and some specialist product or in-depth knowledge or subject matter expertise.
  • Some previous exposure to Motoring or Cycling Category products, chemicals, mechanical products, electronics, or Electrical Engineering, or hardline products would be desirable.
  • Awareness of product manufacturing and the quality principles involved (ISO 9000).
  • Awareness of manufacturing technologies, product design, or sourcing with extended supply chain, digital business, and the application of quality management systems would be beneficial.
