The development of industrialised technologies is vital for delivering new medicines to patients faster.

We are seeking highly skilled individuals to join the Medicines Discovery Catapult team, driving the UK to commercial success in medicines discovery by placing the patient at the forefront of discovery and expediting the sector's progress.

Our Values
  • Excellence: We strive to deliver exceptional solutions for our partners and each other, instilling confidence in everything we do.
  • Integrity: Our unwavering commitment to our purpose drives us to make the right decisions for our partners and each other.
  • Community: As a strong team, we work collaboratively, respecting each other's contributions.
  • Innovation: Driven by the need to create a meaningful impact, we continually seek ways to revolutionise our sector and how we operate.
Role Purpose

The role of the Lead Scientist in Cell and Molecular Biology will provide scientific and project leadership in this discipline, ensuring the delivery of collaborative projects and the integration of the latest technologies to build new capabilities. Additionally, the successful individual will possess extensive experience in complex medicines and understand the challenges associated with developing these therapies towards the clinic. They will leverage this expertise to collaborate with other areas of MDC and external collaborators, developing methodologies in this area.

This role suits a highly motivated self-starter who is passionate about improving preclinical evaluation translation to the clinic, enhancing patient outcomes. As a leader of an interdisciplinary team, the successful candidate will apply their expertise in cell and molecular biology, combined with an understanding of novel therapeutic strategies and complex medicines, to deliver impactful results. Key responsibilities include characterising cellular target engagement and target validation studies, prosecuting therapeutic efficacy assays in vitro, and driving innovation within the organisation.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of scientists with effective line management and matrix management of projects delivered by multiple MDC platforms.
  • Lead collaborative projects to completion, delivering high-quality data in a complex and time-pressured research environment, often involving coordination of multiple internal and/or external resources.
  • Establish and lead collaborations to develop solutions in drug discovery programmes.
  • Develop human cell assays for evaluating a wide range of small molecule, large molecule, and novel therapeutics.
  • Establish and validate experimental endpoints for medicine evaluation to industry standards.
  • Design and deliver strategies to evaluate phenotypic responses of multiple cell populations and complex cell models and tissue samples, including assessment of therapeutic efficacy.
  • Serve as the in vitro technical expert for complex medicine evaluation, providing insights to facilitate the application of MDC technologies in assays within the Catapult.
  • Collaborate with Medicines Discovery Catapult scientists in fields such as complex cell models, preclinical imaging, target engagement, and target validation, in vitro and in vivo, to deliver end-to-end workflows applicable to collaborative projects.
  • Apply expertise to support the delivery of a collaborative project focused on mechanistic understanding of an advanced lead molecule.
  • Deliver high-quality data in a complex and time-pressured research environment.
  • Contribute drug discovery knowledge, scientific insight, and innovative technical approaches to enhance successful drug discovery programmes.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with colleagues from various academic and commercial organisations.
Qualifications and Experience
  • The successful candidates will hold a PhD in cell or molecular biology or a relevant field, accompanied by substantial postdoctoral experience in therapeutic characterisation.
  • Experience working in drug discovery and developing in vitro assays, preferably in an industry setting.
  • Extensive experience in molecular engineering of cells, including lentiviral transduction, CRISPR techniques, and molecular analysis technologies.
  • Extensive experience in culturing mammalian cells, including background working with primary cells and iPSC derivatives, and analysing phenotypic responses.
  • Experience in novel therapeutic approaches, particularly with expertise in lipid nanoparticles, cancer vaccines, ADCs, or other complex medicines.
  • Proven expertise and good publication record in cell and molecular biology.
  • Experience with flow cytometry, microscopy techniques, and molecular analysis would be advantageous.
  • Experience in line management and leadership of a team of scientists.
  • A proven track record of leading and delivering projects in a collaborative environment, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Broad knowledge of innovative technologies applied to advance translational science.
  • Experience working in or with SMEs and a good understanding of commercialising science would be beneficial.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with both experts and non-experts in the field.

We offer a competitive salary between £60,000 - £90,000 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. If you're passionate about advancing translational therapies and joining a dynamic team, please submit your application.
