About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Haematologist to join our team at the Isle of Wight NHS Trust. As a key member of our haematology department, you will be responsible for providing high-quality clinical care to patients, working closely with multidisciplinary teams, and contributing to the development of our haematology services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive clinical haematology care, including outpatient, day case, and inpatient services, working within a multidisciplinary team structure.
  • Offer liaison and clinical advice on haematology test results, anticoagulation, and blood transfusion to hospital and primary care physicians.
  • Review and authorize blood films referred by biomedical scientists for second opinion.
  • Participate in clinical governance and clinical audit.
  • Share in the consultant haematology on-call rota, with one in four consultants from the University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust.
  • Contribute to undergraduate education and the training of postgraduate trainees in haematology, as well as non-medical staff.
  • Contribute to the research output and administrative needs of the department.
  • Contribute to the bone marrow lists in the department.
  • Provide outpatient services for haematology patients, including two formal clinics per week and additional clinics for urgent cases and patients on chemotherapy as necessary.
  • Supervise haematology patients undergoing treatment in day care settings.
  • Maintain and improve the quality of the haematology laboratory service to provide a high-quality, comprehensive diagnostic service.
  • Develop existing specialist services in haematology and haemato-oncology in line with national and network guidelines and Trust policy.
  • Improve blood transfusion practice within the Trust in line with national blood transfusion service guidelines and legal requirements, in conjunction with the Hospital Transfusion Practitioner and the Hospital Transfusion Committee.

Essential Qualifications

  • Full registration and license to practice with the GMC and be on the Specialist Register in Haematology (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview).
  • Applicants that are UK trained must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.

Desirable Qualifications

  • MRCPCH or evidence of equivalent qualification.
  • Evidence of a special interest that complements those of other consultants in the department.
