Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Pharmacy Technician to join our team at Northampton General Hospital. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting the Pharmacy Dispensary, ensuring the accurate and timely dispensing of medications to patients.

Main Responsibilities
  • Accurately and promptly dispense prescriptions for in-patients, out-patients, day-patients, and leave/discharge patients.
  • Issue dispensed medicines to patients and confirm that they know how to use them.
  • Supply Controlled Drugs and maintain accurate records.
  • Undertake final-checking according to a defined policy when competence has been proven.
  • Undertake Enhanced Patient Counselling following appropriate training.
  • Participate in the 'late night' and weekend service provided by the Dispensary department.

Person Specification
  • Essential Skills and Abilities
    • Evidence of accuracy
    • Effective communication, verbal and written
    • Ability to work effectively under pressure
    • Computer skills (dispensing, stock control)
  • Personal Qualities/Attributes
    • Ability to work shifts that cover 7 days of the week
    • Ability to deal with confidential information correctly
    • Able to work until closing time on one day per week
  • Knowledge and Experience
    • Technical 'final-check' of dispensed medicines
    • How dispensing errors occur
    • Experience with computerized stock control system
    • Counselling patients in use of their medicines
    • Good manufacturing practice
  • Desirable Skills and Experience
    • Training of other staff
    • Hospital Pharmacy experience
    • Knowledge of medicines, including how to handle potentially hazardous medicines/substances
    • Supervisory role within pharmacy
  • Education, Training, and Qualifications
    • Qualified Pharmacy Technician or currently enrolled on course to become a qualified Technician within the next 12 months
    • Registered Technician with GPhC if qualified
