Job Description

The Sherwin-Williams Company is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Research and Development to lead our R&D teams in EMEAI. As a key member of the Global Protective & Marine R&D technology leadership team, you will be responsible for driving the development of new product technologies and shepherding key programs that drive strategic global growth in our Protective & Marine business.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Global Technical Leadership: Coordinate global technical activities in conjunction with technical leaders in other regions to ensure alignment with global strategic plans and best practices sharing.
  • Organization Capability Building: Build organization capability and drive efficiency of resource utilization, champion and drive best practices, institute project management and portfolio management with business leaders and R&D teams, review infrastructure requirements, hire, train, and guide people development.
  • Collaboration with Sales and Marketing: Work collaboratively with Sales and Marketing to support and secure new business as well as maintain current customer base.
  • External Technology Partnerships: Identify, institute, and manage external technology and innovation partnerships with global companies and institutes for regional and global advantage in support of overall P&M strategy.
  • Intellectual Property Management: Drive and capture intellectual property developments.
  • Procurement Support: Partner with Regional Procurement to support raw material selection and cost-saving projects for the region.
  • Customer and Supplier Relationships: Develop key customer and supplier relationships that support business maintenance and growth.
  • Safety and Compliance: Promote a safe work environment by driving safety practices, safe equipment utilization, and maintenance in the laboratories.
  • Talent Management: Manage internal/external relationships within a matrix environment, enable and influence internal/external connectivity to drive strategic initiatives and projects, coordinate technical activities in conjunction with global technical leaders to ensure product development and technical transfer to and from the regions in alignment with the global strategic product plans, manage and deploy resources across regions and/or cross-business or functional teams to efficiently and effectively deliver all product and technology goals and services.
  • Leadership and Development: Talent Management Leads, develops, and shapes a market and customer-centric workplace culture for innovative solutions, execution excellence, and continuous improvement. Holds the technical management teams accountable for implementing and achieving technology, product development, and service-related goals and objectives. Leads the integrated talent management activities to attract, develop, provide performance feedback, and retain employees and to ensure optimum level of workforce engagement. Completes, delivers, and oversees individual performance management reviews, succession planning, and establishes employee professional development goals to support future business needs.
Requirements:
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math field.
  • Preferred Education: Master's Degree in Chemistry.
  • Experience: Minimum 15 years industry experience or equivalent in the development of coatings, plastics, or related products and/or polymer development/materials science.
  • Leadership Experience: Direct leadership of teams at multiple sites for > 5 years.
  • Strategic Perspective: Strong strategic perspective and ability to deal with complex requirements and set priorities.
  • Communication Skills: Must be able to communicate in a clear, concise professional manner internally and externally to identify and build productive collaborations and partnerships.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of related Regional markets, product stewardship, and regulatory requirements. Demonstrated intellectual property management, including contracts and patents. Demonstrated ability to work within major cross-functional and global programs/groups. Demonstrated ability to drive open innovation and attract industry and academic experts, ability to set up and lead partnerships and joint developments. Experience in project management tools, Design for Six Sigma/statistical expertise desired.
