Clinical Nurse Educator - Medical Surgical/Special Care Unit Spotlight

The Clinical Nurse Educator plays a vital role in promoting quality care, patient safety, and evidence-based practice in the Medical Surgical/Special Care Unit. This role requires a strong clinical background, excellent communication skills, and the ability to educate and mentor nursing staff.

The Medical Surgical Department is a 23-bed unit that provides care to adult patients across the life span. The unit includes a swing bed program and offers telemetry, orthopedics, post-operative, skilled rehab, comfort care, palliative care, and hospice services.

The Special Care Unit at Waldo County General Hospital is a 4-bed critical care unit that provides intensive therapies and interventions to adult patients. The unit offers acute and chronic respiratory failure, ventilator management, sepsis, metabolic disorders, surgical recoveries, and cardiac monitoring with management.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Education: Bachelors of Science in Nursing or enrolled in a BSN program within 6 months of hire.
  • License/Certifications: Licensed as a registered professional nurse by the Maine State Board of Nursing. Professional certification in practice specialty preferred. Current BLS and ACLS.
  • Experience: Demonstrated clinical expertise in direct patient care as normally acquired through a minimum of 2-3 years clinical experience and meets all the care delivery expectations of the expert clinical nurse within their clinical setting. Experience in classroom instruction and/or clinical teaching associated with specialty-specific settings is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement educational programs for nursing staff.
  • Provide direct patient care to maintain clinical expertise.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to promote quality care and patient safety.
  • Contribute to the overall strategic plan for nursing focusing on clinical practice and professional education and development.
