Job Title: Senior Research Software Engineer and Manager

University of Birmingham is seeking a highly skilled Senior Research Software Engineer and Manager to join our team. As a key member of our Research Software Engineering group, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance to researchers across the University.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the technical software development and support service for researchers
  • Line manage a small team of Research Software Engineers
  • Provide advice, support, and coaching to researchers on software development and best practices
  • Build and maintain relationships with research communities within and outside the University
  • Engage with researchers at all development stages and model and disseminate best practices in research software development
  • Deliver training courses and devise content where applicable
  • Liaise and engage with external professional networks within the software engineering sector
  • Actively manage equality, diversity, and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation

Requirements:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification plus substantial work experience in a relevant technical/scientific and/or management/supervisory role
  • GCSEs to a minimum of grade C in English and Mathematics (or equivalent qualifications)
  • Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied
  • Formal education to degree level or equivalent, preferably in a subject with a strong software engineering component
  • Relevant experience supporting software and software development environments, ideally in a science environment
  • Broad and deep knowledge of software development and analysis processes, tools, and techniques
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team to deliver services
