Indirect Tax Accounting Manager Job Description

At Direct Line Group, we're looking for a skilled Indirect Tax Accounting Manager to join our team. As a key member of our finance department, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and compliance of our VAT accounts.

The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for the management and review of VAT account reconciliations and returns. You'll lead on the relationship with Finance Shared Service, overseeing the VAT accounting across all group entities in the VAT group, and preparing the consolidated group VAT return for submission via the HMRC upload feed.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the monthly review of the VAT accounts reconciliation prepared by Finance Shared Service to ensure any reconciling differences are analysed and clear next steps are advised to remediate.
  • Leading the review of the quarterly legal entity VAT returns ensuring all transactions are included correctly in line with VAT regulations and the PESM and advising on treatment of new or non-standard transactions.
  • Consolidating and filing of the VAT group quarterly VAT return to HMRC in-line with the statutory deadlines and overseeing the payments to ensure that the liabilities and payments on account are made on time.
  • Completing the annual Partial Exemption Special Method and Capital Goods Scheme calculations.
  • Preparing Error Correction Notifications (ECNs) to HMRC, evaluating any evidence to support the ECN, and co-ordinating any necessary remedial actions across the Group.
  • Maintaining the property Option to Tax register and preparing any new option to tax notifications for VAT purposes and reviewing the property income from managing agents.
  • Reviewing supplier set-up, third-party invoicing, intra-group services, and ensuring all agreed design and build processes and contractual terms are followed and providing advice to Finance and Business colleagues regarding best practice.
  • Reviewing end-to-end Motability VAT postings, reconciliations, and VAT statement to ensure they are correct and complete and remediating any errors and advising on improvements.
  • Co-ordinating the continuous improvement of indirect tax reporting and audit processes in relation to VAT accounting.
  • Ensuring tax & non-tax risks and issues are recorded and supporting the Head of Indirect Tax to ensure the issues are resolved through appropriate channels.

We're looking for a suitable tax qualification, such as Chartered Institute of Taxation or Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales, or other accounting qualification, with post-qualification experience in an accounting or tax role. Financial services experience is also desirable. Solid technical grounding in UK tax accounting with an awareness of indirect taxes in the financial sector is essential. Effective working relationships with tax authorities and external advisers are necessary.
