Job Overview

Wenzel's The Bakers, a family-founded business since 1975, is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to oversee its growing financial operations. This role will be responsible for managing financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls, ensuring compliance with regulations and driving financial strategy to support business growth.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Financial Reporting: Prepare and present accurate and timely financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement) in compliance with UK GAAP.
  2. Closing Process: Ensure monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes are completed on time and with a high degree of accuracy.
  3. Financial Analysis: Oversee preparation and analysis of financial reports to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for the business.
Budgeting & Forecasting
  1. Budget Leadership: Lead the budgeting process, working closely with department heads to ensure budgets are realistic and align with company goals.
  2. Rolling Forecasts: Prepare rolling forecasts and conduct variance analysis to compare actual results to budgets/forecasts, providing actionable insights for management.
Internal Controls & Compliance
  1. Internal Controls: Develop and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  2. Policies Enforcement: Monitor and enforce financial policies, ensuring adherence to laws, regulations, and company standards.
  3. Audit Coordination: Coordinate with external auditors for year-end audits, always ensuring audit readiness.
Cash Flow Management
  1. Liquidity Oversight: Oversee the company's cash flow management, ensuring sufficient liquidity for operational needs and capital investments.
  2. Working Capital: Optimise working capital through efficient management of payables and inventory.
Financial Analysis & Decision Support
  1. Strategic Analysis: Provide strategic financial analysis and advice to the executive team, helping guide key business decisions.
  2. Cost-Benefit Analysis: Conduct cost-benefit analysis, financial projections, and scenario planning to evaluate business opportunities and risks.
Team Leadership & Development
  1. Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a team of finance professionals, fostering a high-performance culture.
  2. Professional Development: Ensure continuous professional development and training for the finance team to enhance their technical and leadership capabilities.
Systems & Process Improvement
  1. Process Enhancement: Drive improvements in accounting and financial reporting systems, processes, and procedures.
  2. Finance Technology: Lead or collaborate on finance technology projects to enhance efficiency and reduce errors in financial operations.
Qualifications
  1. Education: Bachelor's degree required.
  2. Accounting Qualification: ACCA/ACA/CIMA or similar professional accounting qualification is preferred.
Experience
  1. Financial Experience: Several years of experience in financial accounting, with experience in a managerial or supervisory role.
  2. Financial Reporting: Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting processes.
  3. GAAP Knowledge: Strong knowledge of GAAP, tax regulations, and financial compliance standards.
  4. Accounting Software: Proficiency in accounting software (ideally Xero) and Microsoft Excel.
