About the Role

National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK's National Metrology Institute, dedicated to advancing measurement science and technology. Our team is seeking an experienced Senior Scientist to join our Optical Radiation Metrology Group, which plays a crucial role in improving the quality and reliability of measurement data for Earth observation and climate monitoring.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide scientific leadership to the team, focusing on low-temperature physics and cryogenic radiometry, predictable quantum efficiency detectors, absolute radiometry, and primary spectral responsivity.
  • Contribute to the development of ambient-temperature absolute radiometry, supporting our work in primary spectral responsivity.
  • Deliver impactful, high-quality research and commercial services to agreed time, cost, and quality.
  • Collaborate with the Earth Observation and Climate Monitoring community, as well as industries where absolute optical radiometry is critical.
About You

We are looking for a highly experienced scientist with a minimum of 5 years of working experience at a National Metrology Institute in the areas of low-temperature physics and cryogenic radiometry, predictable quantum efficiency detectors, absolute radiometry, and primary spectral responsivity.

You will be comfortable leading aspects of the group's laboratory-based work, ensuring the use of best practice in scientific method, quality, and health and safety. A relevant academic qualification to at least degree level, ideally Masters or PhD in an Engineering or Science subject, is required.

Strong laboratory-based skills, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to influence both technical and non-technical audiences are essential. Experience in leading teams of scientists, technical business development, and defining and delivering on scientific strategy are also highly valued.
