About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Clinical Head of Community Specialist Nursing to join our team at East Lancashire Hospice. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for the clinical leadership and management of our hospice clinical nurse specialist team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive the development and delivery of the service in line with our clinical strategy, ensuring high-quality evidence-based specialist palliative care is delivered with care, compassion, and dignity to patients and those important to them.
  • Provide clinical leadership, caseload management, and coordination to ensure the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based specialist and supportive palliative care.
  • Work as a positive, proactive role model and autonomous practitioner, demonstrating excellent standards of specialist assessment, care planning, and evaluation of interventions.
  • Collaborate effectively with primary and community care colleagues and other partners to promote awareness of and access to hospice services, encourage referrals, and reduce the fear associated with death and dying.
  • Develop, manage, and maintain the service to respond to patients and their families experiencing crisis situations within the community, preventing avoidable hospital admissions and readmissions.
  • Lead on non-medical prescribing within the team, including the development, implementation, and review of NMP policy and procedures.
  • Take a lead on specific projects and work collaboratively with others to make a significant contribution to the delivery of hospice strategic objectives, governance agenda, and local initiatives to improve specialist and supportive palliative care across our community.

  • Current interventions and strategies for palliative care.
  • Current palliative care research and developments and implications for patients.
  • Governance priorities, and the standards and expectations of regulatory bodies.
  • Practical use of computer systems and Microsoft packages.

  • Knowledge of national and local drivers and developments within palliative and end-of-life care.

Qualifications

Essential

  • RN (Adult) with valid NMC registration.
  • Level 7 degree/study in a relevant clinical field or nearing completion.
  • Recognised post-registration qualification(s) / in field relevant to role.
  • V300 Non-Medical Prescribing or willing to undertake.
  • Advanced assessment/clinical examination skills or willingness to undertake.
  • Advanced communication skills.
  • Leadership/Management qualification.
  • Teaching/Assessing qualification.
  • Evidence of professional development including validated clinical development or courses.
  • GCSE/NVQ Level 2 in English/Maths.
  • ECDL or equivalent certificates/experience using Microsoft/office packages.

  • Substantial post-registration experience.
  • Recent post-registration interest and experience in the delivery of specialist palliative care for a range of life-limiting illnesses.
  • Experience working with a wide range of people in a variety of settings to improve patient outcomes, including patients, carers, the multidisciplinary team, and other providers.
  • Advance care planning and supporting patients, relatives, and others through life-changing situations, impending grief, and bereavement.
  • Caseload management, including the planning, supervising, and organizing of work.
  • Development and mentorship of clinical staff/volunteers.
  • Complex case management.

Desirable

  • Experience of providing clinical advice and/or triaging referrals.
  • Community nursing experience.

  • Ability to take full responsibility for the management of a service and caseload.
  • High level of clinical skills relevant to the specialty, with an understanding of reversible causes, integrating theory to practice.
  • Understanding of the clinical rationale for the pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of symptoms utilized within palliative care.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with report writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively time manage and plan, prioritize, and coordinate workload.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish effective working relationships with the multidisciplinary team and wider stakeholders.
  • Leadership skills/qualities.
  • Change management experience/skill.
  • Critical thinking, with the ability to think objectively and laterally, recognizing internal and external influences on service provision and development.
  • Proficient with the keyboard and Microsoft office applications, with the ability to record/deal with accurate facts, figures, and information to support clinical and managerial activity.
  • Well-developed approach to customer care, with the ability to influence, negotiate, and deal with conflict situations.
  • Good budget management and housekeeping skills.
  • Car driver with full UK license and access to a vehicle for work purposes.
