Offshore Marine Engineer Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Marine Engineer to join our team at MSSC. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a unique offshore environment, contributing to the safe operation and maintenance of our vessels.

About the Role

The primary purpose of this position is to deliver the maintenance and safe operation of all machinery on board the vessel. This includes responsibility for the hull, structure, main and auxiliary machinery, electrical and electronic systems, fuel, water, LP air and hydraulics, and the planning and execution of off-season maintenance periods.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Commanding Officer to achieve the successful execution of the offshore sailing programme.
  • To conduct routine maintenance of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, water systems in accordance with the vessel's Planned Maintenance Schedules.
  • To operate engines, generators, electrical, hydraulic and water systems as required.
  • To carry out general ship husbandry.
  • To effect repairs and planned maintenance during the season and refit periods as requested by the Offshore Technical team.
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of specific machinery and equipment through ongoing training and other methods as required by MSSC.
  • To fully understand and utilise the Electronic Planned Maintenance System (BMAINTAIN/SCRAMS)
  • To liaise with contractors on behalf of the offshore technical team as required.
  • To advise and guide relief Marine Engineers
  • To assist with the delivery of the cadet training programme.
  • To support the Ship's Captain during the winter maintenance period (Dec to Feb) by ensuring all maintenance and refit job cards, checks, inspections, modifications, and servicing routines within their department are conducted in a timely and satisfactory manner. This will require close liaison with contractors and shore support staff, and regular update briefings on progress with the Captain and shore technical support staff.
  • Ensure cadets and staff operate in line with the MSSC's safeguarding and other policies.

Requirements

  • Approved Engine Course (AEC (preferred), Minimum RYA 1 Day Diesel Course with considerable other experience) Lv3 Engineering, RN or other Merchant Engineering experience will also be considered.
  • ENG1 or ML5 medical certification (or a willingness to obtain and maintain).
  • Ability to act as the sole Marine Engineer on board.
  • Management and leadership experience with ability to direct ship's staff and crew with clarity and authority.
  • Be able to investigate and diagnose faults on all equipment/plant on board MSSC offshore vessels.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to act as part of a vessel's emergency response team.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, COSHH and safeguarding legislation and best practice procedures as they relate to working with children, young people and vulnerable adults.
  • Computer literacy – good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Email & SharePoint.
  • Must be a team player who can work closely in a small team.
  • Possession of an ENG 1 or ML5 medical certificate, or an ability and willingness to obtain.

Desirable

  • Time-served Engineering apprenticeship or a sound background and experience in mechanical and electrical engineering (e.g. RN ME training).
  • Experience in providing instructional lectures or topics (on subjects such as basic engineering checks, firefighting, man-overboard recovery);
  • Knowledge of Sea Cadet training procedures.
  • Experience of using a Safety Management System to maintain all safety and routine maintenance systems.
