About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Optical Systems Engineer to join our R&D team at Octagon Group. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and delivering complex scientific instrumentation and products.

Key Responsibilities

  • System Design and Specification
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to define system design and specification, covering concept development, design calculations or modelling for optical, mechanical, electronic or algorithmic aspects of the system.
  • Design Verification and Testing
    • Manage design verification activities, including running design reviews, as well as design and execution of test plans for prototype evaluation.
  • Failure Investigation and Troubleshooting
    • Investigate selected manufacturing/field failures in order to determine root cause and initiate remedial actions.
  • Product Performance Understanding
    • Understand the products' performance parameters both at the system and sub-system level.
  • Team Leadership and Guidance
    • Work with and guide junior staff members in executing test plans and interpreting results.
  • Troubleshooting and Root Cause Analysis
    • Actively participate in troubleshooting activities including root cause analysis both in the context of new product development and ongoing manufacturing issues.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Education and Experience
    • At least a bachelor's degree or higher in Physics, or a related subject.
    • Extensive experience in the design, troubleshooting and manufacture of optical equipment.
  • Technical Leadership and Skills
    • Experience in technical leadership role.
    • Experience of working within a structured development program.
    • High level of engineering / physics / maths knowledge.
    • Ability to use complex software.
