Lead Mechanical Design Engineer for Marine Innovation

Workshop Recruitment is seeking a skilled Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team in the Portsmouth area. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in mechanical engineering, with a strong understanding of design principles and a proven track record of delivering innovative solutions.

About the Role:

This senior role will be instrumental in the design of current and future projects, working closely with industry-leading experts to take ownership of mechanical systems from concept to production. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively in a close-knit team.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Generate design concepts through to production, ensuring that proposed solutions meet project requirements for function, quality, timing, and cost.
  2. Work on a variety of projects, including fabricated structures for series production and one-off prototypes.
  3. Take a key role within large programmes or lead smaller projects, working closely with technical lead engineers.
  4. Deliver designs of components and systems meeting company processes and standards.
  5. Contribute to the continual improvement and development of methodologies and toolsets.
  6. Support pre-contract and concept generation, feasibility studies, and early-stage planning.
  7. Lead and develop junior team members.
  8. Complete hand calculations for mechanical fixings, inserts, and bonded joints.
  9. Provide technical liaison with customers, suppliers, manufacturing, and internal stakeholders.
  10. Support business development activities and create customer proposals.
  11. Support project management activities and monitor project plans and progress.
  12. Balancing multiple concurrent projects, understand priorities, and clearly show progress, delivery status, and key risks and issues.
  13. Support physical build, evaluation, and validation.
  14. Compile DFMEA's.
  15. Manage external resources in conjunction with line manager.

Requirements:

  1. A degree in mechanical, automotive, marine, or aerospace engineering.
  2. Extensive experience in major CAD systems (NX ideally) to produce detailed drawings with correct GD&T and DFM application.
  3. Excellent understanding of mechanical engineering principles and design calculations.
  4. Experience in designing metallic and composite components would be ideal.
  5. Understanding of materials, welding, bonding, and fastening techniques.
  6. Familiarity with hands-on workshop activities like fabrication, CNC machining would be desirable.
  7. Classical hand calculations and creating own calculation sheets.
  8. FEA tools experience to accelerate development and support validation of design.
  9. Working knowledge of TeamCentre and Siemens SimCentre would be advantageous.
  10. Production manufacturing techniques understanding would be desirable.
  11. Ability to coach and supervise junior engineers, delegate as appropriate.
  12. Must be able to work within a close-knit team, taking and giving instruction as needed.
  13. Project management experience would be an advantage.
  14. Committed to taking ownership of allocated tasks, determined to achieve challenging tasks and self-motivated.
  15. Attention to detail, accurate at all times, and apply appropriate validation techniques.
