Sotheby's is a leading global art auctioneer with a rich history of expertise in the art market. We are currently seeking a highly motivated Senior Litigation Attorney to join our Compliance and Litigation team.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will have approximately five years of post-qualification experience in a dispute resolution practice area at a leading UK commercial law firm. They will be responsible for providing legal advice and support on contentious matters in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. This will include advising on and resolving disputes arising from contractual terms; title disputes; claims relating to mis-cataloguing, attribution, authenticity of works, and negligence; and debt recovery-related matters. The ideal candidate will also be able to assess and balance commercial and regulatory risks, think strategically, and clearly communicate complex information to stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Advising on and resolving contentious matters arising from all aspects of Sotheby's business in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia
  • Undertaking risk assessments to pre-empt any potential issues or claims and identifying risk factors related to the sale of property at auction and through private sale
  • Reporting to senior management on potential financial exposure and seeking corporate governance approvals as required
  • Instructing, managing, and working closely with external counsel in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and managing legal spend on the same
  • Dealing with and providing advice to specialist departments and support departments across the business

Requirements:

  • Approximately five years of post-qualification experience in a dispute resolution practice area at a leading UK commercial law firm
  • Admittance to practice in England and Wales is essential
  • Excellent analytical and drafting skills, ability to produce clear, high-quality writing, and advanced communication and presenting skills
  • Ability to assess and balance commercial and regulatory risks and provide clear guidance and workable solutions on contentious and sensitive issues
  • Professional and calm manner, able to multi-task and prioritize tasks independently across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia

Salary:

The estimated salary for this position is £120,000 - £180,000 per annum, depending on experience.
