Overview

We are seeking a skilled Clinical Coding Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of medical terminology and coding procedures, ensuring accurate and efficient coding for healthcare services.

About the Role

  • To provide high-quality coded clinical data by following national clinical coding rules and conventions. It is essential to ensure the data is accurate and complete to meet Trust deadlines, while supporting the allocation of Healthcare Resource Groups (HRGs), Service Line reporting, Clinical Governance, and facilitating maximisation of the Trust income in line with Payment by Results (PbR).
  • To work with clinical teams and other relevant personnel to maintain coding accuracy and integrity at the highest level.
  • To mentor and/or support all other clinical coding team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality coded clinical data in a timely manner by adhering to national clinical coding rules and conventions.
  • Ensure data accuracy and completeness to meet Trust deadlines and facilitate maximisation of the Trust income in line with Payment by Results (PbR).
  • Work within a Clinical Division, coding episodes of inpatient and day-case activity direct from patient health records and other electronic applications.
  • Input coded information into the hospital PAS computer system, prioritising accuracy, timeliness, and confidentiality.
  • Understand the impact of coded data on business aspects of the Trust and communicate complexities to clinical colleagues.
  • Organise and prioritise own workload, being aware of day-to-day workload levels and flexible to assist colleagues in other specialties.
  • Liaise regularly with Divisional staff and key stakeholders to ensure high-quality coded clinical data.
  • Mentor and/or support all other clinical coding team members.
  • Work towards and pass the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) and complete the Clinical Coding Standards Refresher Course every three years.
  • Update own skills when necessary, as required by the organisation.

Requirements

  • Completed Approved Clinical Coding Standards Course
  • Good educational background to GCSE standard or equivalent
  • Expert knowledge in medical terminology and anatomy and physiology
  • Experience coding in an acute hospital, covering a wide range of specialties
  • Proven ability to meet individual and team deadlines
  • Effective written and spoken communication skills
  • Experience working in pressurised situations and meeting team deadlines

Working Arrangements

The successful candidate will be offered a 12-month fixed-term contract with a salary of £14.11 per hour, working 37.5 hours per week. The role is based in Southampton and offers a hybrid remote working arrangement.
