Appointment of a Non-Lawyer Member to the Scottish Legal Complaints Commission Board

Edinburgh, Edinburgh, United Kingdom The Scottish Government Full time

Overview

The Scottish Legal Complaints Commission (SLCC) is an independent statutory body providing a single point of contact for all complaints against legal practitioners operating in Scotland.

We are a small public sector organisation which means members can have a real impact on our work, approach and the experience of those we serve, and we are very suitable for those looking for a first remunerated non-executive appointment.

Our functions are tightly defined by statute and fall into three groups:

  • Complaints: We help hundreds of members of the public each year with concerns about legal services, working with legal services providers to resolve these, or formally adjudicating on an outcome and awarding redress where appropriate.
  • Oversight and improvement: We also have a wider role in overseeing other elements of regulation in the sector (led by the traditional professional bodies) and in issuing guidance.
  • Consumer voice: Finally, we support a statutory Consumer Panel which helps inform complaints handling and regulation.

Members play an essential dual role at the SLCC. In addition to forming the Board of the SLCC, they also make important decisions on individual complaints. Members can be involved at the start when considering if a complaint is one the SLCC can accept (this work is done by a single member acting alone, and at a time of your choosing). They are also involved at the end of the process when they make determinations to uphold, uphold in part or not uphold complaints (some of this work is done remotely at a time of your choosing within a given window, some will involve scheduled meetings or video conference calls). It is essential that members applying for the role have time available to undertake the adjudicative work (see information pack for more details).
