{"title": "Climate Research Scientist", "subtitle": "Aviation NOx Emissions", "content": "

We are seeking a highly skilled Climate Research Scientist to join our team at the University of Reading. As a Climate Research Scientist, you will investigate the climate impacts of aircraft emissions, specifically oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Your research will focus on understanding the effects of NOx emissions on climate and whether engine manufacturers need to reduce these emissions.

The climate impact of aircraft is a complex issue, and our research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects of NOx emissions. You will work as part of a team within the NERC CRANE project, which is a component of the NERC/Department for Transport programme "Jet zero: aviation's non-CO2 impacts on the climate".

Your main role will be to set up and run simulations using the UK Earth system model (UKESM1.1), which includes representations of tropospheric and stratospheric chemistry. You will analyze the outputs from these simulations to quantify how changes in NOx emissions affect the composition of the atmosphere, radiative forcing, and the full climate response on different hemispheres.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to original research that will be published in leading peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international scientific meetings. You will interact with project partners, attend project meetings, and contribute to the departmental research environment.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • PhD or equivalent in physical sciences or applied mathematics, or be close to attaining one
  • Knowledge of quantitative atmospheric or climate sciences
  • Experience in running climate or other atmospheric models
  • Scientific analysis skills

We are committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcome applications from candidates who meet the requirements of the role.
