Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Orthoptists, Nurses and Ophthalmology management team. The role will involve responsible for Orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and management of patient referred to the Orthoptic Department from various departments.

The post holder will provide operational, day to day management of the orthoptic team. This will include managing clinical workload, teaching of healthcare professionals and working unsupervised and deal with own highly complex caseload.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in all aspects of clinical Orthoptics. They will have experience of organising and managing clinical workload, post registration experience in area of clinical expertise and teaching of healthcare professionals.

The post holder will be responsible for providing leadership and direction for the orthoptist workforce. They will work with service managers in providing effective, professional leadership and direction for the orthoptist workforce.

Qualifications and Knowledge

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor of Science in Orthoptics BSc (Orth) or Bmed Sci (Orthoptics) and or Diploma of the British Orthoptic Council. They will be registered with the Health Professions Council and have post graduate qualifications in area of clinical expertise or evidence of working at post grad Masters level.

The post holder will have highly specialist knowledge of the investigation, diagnosis and management of orthoptic patients. They will have in depth knowledge of formulating, planning and co-ordinating specialist treatment plans involving complex facts and situations.

Desirable

The ideal candidate will have a teaching and assessing certificate, post graduate British and Irish Orthoptic Society Clinical Educators Course or British Orthoptic Society Clinical Demonstrators Course. They will have knowledge of lesson planning, teaching techniques and assessment methods.

The post holder will have evidence of participation in audit and research in area of clinical expertise. They will have experience in health and safety and risk management.

Experience

The successful candidate will have experience in a leadership role - lead clinician for a service area. They will have management experience and active participation in special interest group relevant to post.

The post holder will have experience in policy implementation and service development. They will have experience in undertaking audits and experience in risk management.

Language Skills

The ideal candidate will have Welsh language skills (Level 1).
