Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence Full time

Position Overview

Are you interested in contributing to critical Defence matters and enhancing the national security of the United Kingdom? The Ordnance, Munitions & Explosives (Level 6) Degree Apprenticeship program offers a unique opportunity to engage in this vital field.

Established to provide nuclear capabilities that deter threats, the Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) plays a crucial role in safeguarding our nation. The DNO manages all aspects of defence nuclear operations, excluding direct actions, and is tasked with ensuring nuclear deterrence, overseeing the Defence Nuclear Enterprise, and advising on nuclear policy and international collaboration.

For over six decades, the UK's independent nuclear deterrent has been pivotal in countering severe threats to our security and that of our NATO partners. To maintain a credible nuclear deterrent, we are developing advanced nuclear-armed submarines and modernizing our nuclear warheads, showcasing the best of British engineering and technology.

The DNO values diversity and inclusion, recognizing that varied perspectives foster innovation and better decision-making. We cultivate an environment where all individuals feel valued and empowered, contributing positively to our mission.

Role Responsibilities

As an apprentice, you will need a strong desire to learn, a logical mindset for problem-solving, and self-motivation. The 5-year apprenticeship requires commitment to achieving a Level 6 degree qualification. If you possess these qualities, we encourage you to consider this opportunity.

The Defence Nuclear Enterprise comprises various governmental and industrial entities that collectively sustain the UK's nuclear capabilities. This includes the diverse organizations and personnel involved in delivering our nuclear deterrent.

Apprenticeship Details

The Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME) Level 6 Professional Degree (BEng) Apprenticeship emphasizes safety within the engineering sector. The program is conducted in partnership with The University of Wales Trinity Saint David, with off-the-job learning structured in block releases. You will spend significant time at the university, engaging in intensive learning sessions.

This apprenticeship is recognized by the Institute of Explosives Engineers (IExpE), and you will become a student member during your training, leading to professional registration upon completion.

Candidate Profile

As an OME Safety Case apprentice, your duties will include coursework supporting your BEng Degree, funded by the Ministry of Defence, alongside practical training for professional growth. You will have the chance to:

  • Assist in projects led by safety professionals during placements across the UK.
  • Draft and evaluate technical documentation.
  • Participate in site visits and relevant conferences.
  • Gain knowledge and demonstrate the skills necessary for the safety pathway.

Essential Qualifications

To qualify for this apprenticeship, candidates must possess:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade 4 (Grade C) or above, including mandatory subjects: Maths and English Language.
  • 2 A Levels (or equivalent) at Grade C or above, preferably in STEM-related subjects.

Evidence of qualifications will be required during the onboarding process.

Working Environment

Your primary duty station will be at MOD Abbey Wood, with opportunities for training placements at various MOD and industry sites across the UK, focusing on nuclear safety. Travel and accommodation costs for detached duties will be covered by the MOD.

Support and Development

The Early Careers team will provide ongoing support throughout your apprenticeship, assigning a mentor to enhance your understanding of the DNE and MOD operations. You will also have access to an Apprentice Liaison Officer for guidance on integrating academic and workplace learning.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting salary for this position is £24,985, with additional contributions towards your pension scheme. Benefits include tailored learning and development opportunities, flexible working arrangements, and a culture that promotes diversity and inclusion.

We believe in fostering a supportive and rewarding work environment, offering various employee benefits to enhance your experience within the Ministry of Defence.
