Job Overview

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and motivated Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse to join our Critical Care team. As a critical care specialist, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality patient care and contributing to the development of our team.

Main Responsibilities
  • Manage a group of patients within the specialty, working as part of the multidisciplinary team to deliver individualized and personalized direct patient care.
  • Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.
  • Administer prescribed medication, including transfusion of blood and blood products, and ensure accurate records of clinical service.
  • Recognize emergencies in the specialty, interpret information, and take appropriate action, leading others to do the same.
  • Ensure patients receive high-quality clinical care and a good patient experience, respecting their customs, religious beliefs, and doctrines.
  • Provide leadership, support, and guidance to staff in monitoring the planning, delivery, and evaluation of individualized care.
  • Be accountable for practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence.
  • Ensure safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advanced clinical skills and carry out specialist nursing procedures.
  • Store sensitive patient records appropriately and minimize the risk of cross-infection.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, carers, and families regarding disease treatment and management.
  • Facilitate a high-quality, cost-effective specialist service through monitoring and audit and other quality initiatives.
  • Identify and intervene in unsafe environments for patients and staff, bringing instances to the attention of the Sister/Charge Nurse.
  • Develop a learning environment and specialist training for pre- and post-registration learners and participate in the development of appropriate programs.
  • Contribute to the Trust's clinical supervision program for staff and assist the Sister/Charge Nurse in developing a culture that is challenging, stimulating, rewarding, and supportive.
  • Act as a mentor/assessor to unqualified staff, providing education, advice, and support to a team of nurses.
  • Utilize research findings in the delivery of specialist patient care, developing new ways of working, and disseminating relevant information to staff.
  • Provide a leadership role model, demonstrating specialist knowledge and high standards of clinical practice, and provide support or advice when necessary.
Person Specification

Qualifications

  • BSC/1st degree (health-related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience.
  • Evidence of specialist course.
  • Mentorship/Teaching Qualification.
  • Post-registration qualification in or demonstrate relevant experience and competence (appropriate area of specialty).

Desirable Criteria

  • Leadership qualification.

Professional/Statutory Registration

  • RN1/RN2/RN12 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register, holding the appropriate level for the area of specialty.

Experience

  • Experience and competence in the management of patients within the specialty.
  • Experience of teaching/assessing/supervising others in a clinical setting.
  • Supervision of junior staff.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of co-ordinating a shift.

Skills/Knowledge/Ability

  • Up-to-date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues, knowledge of evidence-based practice.
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients/clients and give relevant advice/information to patients and relatives.
  • Evidence of involvement and leadership in teaching and mentoring learners.
  • An understanding of audit and research-based nursing practice.
  • Good communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive information, including dealing with distressed relatives, care of terminally ill, and other challenging situations.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of clinical governance and risk management and how this affects their role and the department.
