This role presents an excellent opportunity for a seasoned Sustainability Operations Manager to advance their career within a well-established project execution team. We provide the flexibility of part-time remote work; however, the position will primarily involve site-based activities and work at our main project facility. This role necessitates considerable travel, and possessing a valid driving license is essential.

The BBPTD Sustainability Team comprises diverse professionals who adopt a hands-on approach, collaborating to address environmental and sustainability challenges while ensuring project success.

  • Offering guidance, support, and direction to the operational project management team to facilitate the delivery of environmentally compliant projects and sustainable initiatives in accordance with environmental regulations, internal protocols, and client expectations.
  • Overseeing a team of Environmental Sustainability Advisors, Project Ecologists, and Archaeologists to ensure the effective execution of various sustainability deliverables, including the fulfillment of planning conditions, completion of archaeological assessments, implementation of ecological measures, and adherence to client sustainability objectives.
  • Conducting high-level reviews of sustainability content in construction methodologies, risk assessments, cost estimations, schedules, and other project-specific outputs.
  • Reporting on best practices and investigating environmental incidents, providing feedback to project teams and clients with the assistance of your colleagues.
  • Leading and managing investigations into incidents and non-compliance issues.
  • Participating in lessons learned sessions and identifying areas for enhancement.
  • Collaborating with the Head of Sustainability to promote Zero Harm goals and Building New Futures strategies, driving continuous performance improvement.
  • Serving as the primary liaison for regulators and other environmental stakeholders, proactively engaging with them regarding any concerns or challenges.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess the following essential qualifications and experience:

  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in an environmental field.
  • Comprehensive understanding of current environmental regulations.
  • Strong familiarity with the construction industry, preferably in Utilities.
  • Experience in interpreting technical documents and translating them into operational language.
  • Solid background in evaluating environmental risks and knowledge of mitigation strategies.
  • Awareness or understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain principles.
  • Previous experience in engaging with regulatory bodies.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels, fostering relationships and producing comprehensive reports.
  • A professional and collaborative team player capable of building and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Strong business acumen, employee focus, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Experience in program management with a systematic approach to tracking and documenting progress.
  • Commercial awareness of contracting and experience in managing subcontractors.
  • A valid driving license.
  • Interest in the utilities, construction, or engineering sectors.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Desirable Attributes

  • Relevant IEMA level or equivalent professional certification.
  • Familiarity with Environmental and Sustainability Management systems.
  • Knowledge and practical experience with GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Experience in delivering projects in accordance with CEEQUAL/BREEAM standards.
