Role Overview
The Automation Systems Engineer is integral to the Controls Team at TGW Northern Europe, playing a vital role in the successful execution of our projects.

Key Responsibilities
This position entails the development of software, conducting simulations, and commissioning Level 2 PLC control systems for our automated material handling solutions, which includes system testing and commissioning.

To ensure project success, the engineer will work closely with Control Services Managers and the Lead Automation Engineer. The role also involves mentoring Junior Engineers and Apprentices in project-related tasks.

Collaboration
Effective communication with Project Managers, Controls, Engineering Designers, and Clients is crucial, whether at our headquarters or various installation sites across Northern Europe.

Continuous Improvement
The Automation Systems Engineer promotes a culture of ongoing enhancement, focusing on personal development for all team members.

Main Responsibilities

Pre-Site Phase
Assist the Lead Automation Engineer in the creation of:

  • 3rd party interface documentation
  • The Functional Design Specification (FDS) for PLCs
  • PLC module inventories
  • Generating PLC code using TGW standard tools and architecture, ensuring compliance with version control
  • Emulating PLCs and subsystems according to defined objectives

Site Phase

  • Take responsibility for PLC areas/products, addressing software, hardware, or electrical challenges
  • Conduct comprehensive Level 2 PLC commissioning
  • Commission communications with WCS/WMS systems
  • Test and validate emergency stop systems
  • Integrate and test third-party equipment
  • Identify and resolve software, hardware, and electrical issues
  • Collaborate with the Lead, engineers, and project managers on system testing and PLC functionality verification
  • Participate in daily controls stand-up meetings for progress updates and resource planning
  • Support the technical development of Junior Engineers and apprentices

Work Schedule
The role may require on-site work or travel, with a rotation on a 10-4 shift pattern.

Candidate Profile
To excel in this position, candidates should demonstrate the ability to work effectively within a team and coordinate activities as necessary.

Proven experience in generating PLC code, preferably with Siemens PLCs, along with knowledge and experience in commissioning and testing automated systems, is essential.

A solid grasp of control systems is required, including networking and hardware components, Fieldbus technologies such as Profibus, Profinet, and ASi, as well as motion control through inverters and servo drives.

Additionally, strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills are crucial for success in this role.
