The Opportunity:

We are seeking a Software Architect who is passionate about tackling diverse and stimulating client challenges. This role involves overseeing the architecture and high-level design of software-enabled solutions, while also collaborating directly with client managers in a pre-sales capacity to cultivate relationships and devise solutions that foster future business growth.

The ideal candidate will possess substantial experience in developing distributed software solutions, particularly those that utilize middleware technologies to facilitate information management across networks that may experience denial, degradation, or limited connectivity. While solutions are generally validated in cloud-based environments, this role will require deployment in customer settings that utilize military tactical equipment and communication systems without internet access.

Your Role:

  • Innovate and develop advanced software solutions within the Defence sector, including distributed middleware, software-defined networks, and the integration of artificial intelligence (e.g., large language models, reinforcement learning) to address client challenges.
  • Define and articulate software solutions in architectural terms, encompassing system boundaries, data flows, workflows, system layouts, and deployment strategies.
  • Act as the technical lead for the execution of both internally and externally funded projects.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to engineers, assisting them in understanding client challenges and demonstrating viable solutions.
  • Advocate for an architecture-driven approach within existing engineering processes.

Key Skills

  • Demonstrated experience as a software architect in Defence, public sector, or industry, with proficiency in multiple programming languages.
  • Proven ability to establish robust engineering management plans and lead teams in their execution, including continuous integration, continuous deployment, and test-driven development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Agile delivery methodologies such as Scrum and Kanban.
  • Experience in transforming research outputs (data science experimentation) into reliable software products.
  • Knowledge or experience in designing software solutions with a focus on performance and resource utilization, utilizing middleware technologies.
  • Understanding of software architecture patterns that enhance reuse, productivity, and quality.
  • Experience in designing both plug-in and microservice architectures.
  • Proficiency in designing software with various data storage solutions (relational, NoSQL, Big Data, streaming data analytics).
  • Experience in deploying software across different environments, including on-device, on-premises, and cloud.
  • Ability to clearly articulate design decisions through textual and graphical representations (e.g., UML, Archimate).
  • Quick adaptability to new tools, frameworks, and programming languages.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess problems and communicate well-considered solutions.
  • Capability to create new solutions when existing options are inadequate.

What you'll bring

As a Software Architect, you will hold a degree in a STEM field or possess equivalent practical experience.

You will engage with a variety of technologies, some of which you may already be familiar with, while others you will learn to support specific projects. While comprehensive knowledge of all technologies is not expected, you should be proficient in several, with the ability to acquire new skills as needed:

  • Python/Java/Kotlin and associated backend and middleware frameworks
  • SQL and NoSQL database systems – PostgreSQL, SQLite, MongoDB, Redis
  • Linux-based operating systems – Ubuntu, Centos/RHEL
  • Mobile operating systems – particularly Android
  • Virtual machines – especially VMWare
  • Message brokering, serialization, and queuing systems – MQTT, Kafka, Protobuf, DDS, XML
  • Microservices, containers, and orchestration tools - Docker, Podman, Kubernetes
  • Infrastructure as Code – Vagrant, Ansible, Terraform
  • Cloud platforms – AWS and Azure
  • Version control systems – particularly GitLab
  • Architecture tools – SPARX EA, Archimate

Beyond technical expertise, you will demonstrate proactivity and effective communication with a diverse range of stakeholders. You will thrive both independently and collaboratively, seizing opportunities and exhibiting curiosity to identify the best approaches, solutions, and tools for each task.

You should draw upon your previous experiences in Software Engineering roles, showcasing a commitment to Continuous Improvement and Learning from Experience. Experience in successful software implementation within the defence sector is advantageous.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Participate and contribute to agile ceremonies following Scrum, Kanban, or SAFe Agile methodologies.
  • Mentor team members in Software Engineering practices.
  • Collaborate with product owners and DevOps to schedule releases and utilize CI/CD pipelines.
  • Work alongside security architects to ensure products and services are designed with security in mind.
  • Collaborate with quality engineers to uphold high standards of product and service quality.
  • Partner with architects to translate high-level architectures into implementable designs.
  • Engage with senior leadership to effectively implement product and service changes.
  • Participate in and contribute to code reviews.
  • Collaborate with client managers to understand customer challenges and propose effective solutions.
