Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Agricultural Technician to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia's Agricultural Research and Extension Center. As a key member of our horticulture research team, you will play a crucial role in supporting groundbreaking research in fruit tree development and management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and oversee fruit tree research plots, ensuring accurate and efficient data collection and management.
  • Engage in rigorous fieldwork, including flagging trees, counting flowers and fruits, and harvesting, to gather valuable data for research purposes.
  • Analyze fruits for physical and chemical characteristics, and document findings in a comprehensive and detailed manner.
  • Prepare plant tissues for molecular and biochemical analysis, including sample grinding with liquid nitrogen, to support research initiatives.
  • Assist in a broad range of field and lab experiments, collaborating with graduate students, field technicians, and other personnel to achieve research goals.
  • Ensure accurate and efficient data management, maintaining comprehensive records of all experimental activities.

Requirements:

  • Direct or related experience in plant science or biology as a wage personnel or similar capacity.
  • Computer literacy, particularly with MS Word, Excel, and other software applications.
  • A valid driver's license and access to personal transportation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in plant biology or related field; practical experience in orchard and laboratory work is ideal.
  • Experience in data management and supervision.

Working Conditions:

This is a restricted appointment, and the successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check. The position will not exceed 1,500 hours within the payment year.
