The Role and the Department


As the Sustainability Coordinator (Staff), you will play a vital role in engaging with the staff community at Durham University on sustainability issues, ranging from energy efficiency to seasonal food sourcing, and from fast fashion to creating a wildlife-friendly campus.


Your responsibilities will include developing and managing the Staff Environment Champion Network, which consists of representatives from various Colleges, Faculties, Departments, and Schools, as well as supporting and implementing environmental initiatives within the staff community.


You will collaborate with Sustainability Champions to promote campaigns and events for staff, while also working alongside experienced Sustainability Managers to achieve and surpass our sustainability goals.


The Energy and Sustainability team is dedicated to advancing sustainability across the University, focusing on areas such as energy management, waste reduction, water conservation, travel, biodiversity, and assisting the University community in minimizing its environmental impact.

This effort supports the University’s vision to fulfill its mission of excellence in education, research, and the broader student experience in the most sustainable manner possible.


The Estates and Facilities Directorate provides essential services to Durham University and is responsible for managing, maintaining, and developing the infrastructure and building fabric across the various campuses.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Five GCSEs at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics
  • NVQ level III (or equivalent) in an environmental-related subject, or other relevant discipline, or relevant, equivalent experience.
  • Experience working in a busy office environment delivering front-line administrative services to a high standard.
  • Experience managing time effectively to meet deadlines and working under pressure without compromising quality.
  • Experience providing advice and guidance to a diverse range of customers and colleagues.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills, including the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.
